Insider tips for Vienna from ALMA Boutique Hotel
Experience Vienna’s sights by tram
From the hotel to the city center: my suggestion for the morning
I use to have my first coffee in our hotel. Freshly grinded beans ensure a strong Espresso, a delicious Cappuccino, or a well-balanced Latte Macchiato – just as required. It is only thereafter that my day commences! For after breakfast and coffee, I suggest a stroll across the oldest lanes of the city. It’s quite practical that Vienna’s most beautiful sights are right before the hotel’s door: from here, I head, via historic Fleischmarkt and Bäckerstraße, to the famous St. Stephen’s Cathedral Square with its numerous sights. Museums, boutiques, tradition-rich department stores, and magnificent buildings lead on to individual discovery tours.
“Kern´s Beisel” – lunch in a hip tavern
My favorite restaurant for lunch is situated directly in the heart of Vienna: “Kern´s Beisel” or, for short, KERN, a tradition-rich Viennese tavern where you may, by chance and unconventionally, encounter the Federal President with his wife as your table neighbors. Beyond the world-famous Wiener schnitzel, the menu includes, among others, homemade goulash, roast joint, hearty soups, fish and, of course, delicious Viennese pastries. And they serve all this in a typical ambiance and with cordial service – a perfect place for the lunch hour!
A true must: a visit to Schönbrunn Palace
For the afternoon, there is no other choice but a visit to Schönbrunn Palace, an absolute must within a Vienna trip, in my opinion! This splendid building with its extensive park ranks among Austria`s most popular sights and is, as of 1996, part of the UNESCO world cultural heritage. One should schedule a couple of hours only for marveling at the marvelous interiors. At least equally worth doing, under fair weather conditions, is an extended stroll through the Schlosspark featuring numerous fountains, the Palm House, the Labyrinth, the Japanese Garden, and many other highlights. A break at Gloriette, vis-à-vis the Palace and with an amazing view over Vienna, makes this experience a perfect one.
My personal suggestion for the evening: dinner in a chic restaurant
Even though it has meanwhile found its way into all guide books, the restaurant PLACHUTTA is still a true piece of Viennese tradition and I like to stop off there all that much. Strictly speaking, there are three eponymous restaurants in Vienna offering the right thing for all tastes – according to whether you prefer it rustic or modern, elegant or puristic. The Plachutta is especially famous for its original Viennese Tafelspitz (prime boiled beef) of first-class quality.
Enjoy Vienna by night – quite relaxed with Vienna Ring Tram
The Ring Tram can be recommended also by day since you are given a great overview of the city and all its sights. At a late hour, this route provides a great new attraction – so don’t fail to make a street car ride while marveling at the historic sites in their beautiful night-time illumination! At Schwedenplatz, just behind the hotel, you can easily get in and out.
