Insider tips for Salzburg from Hotel Haus Arenberg
Hellbrunn: castle, trick fountains, parks, zoo and much more
Stroll through the city and boat trip: the perfect start of the day
To my mind, a perfect day commences with an extended breakfast at Café Tomaselli, the probably oldest traditional coffeehouse in Salzburg. Then I suggest a little boat trip where my guests can discover some important sites of our marvelous city. From the Café, you reach, via Alter Markt (=Old Market) the Salzach River banks where the pier of the AMADEUS is situated. This excursion boat takes its guests straight to Hellbrunn Castle. The unique, playful style of the castle is not by chance: Salzburg’s Archbishop Markus Sittikus had this estate built not as a residence but for mere pleasure. My very personal suggestion: during a promenade across the large castle park, one can completely relax and leave all one’s cares behind. Also a visit to the trick fountains is simply a must – with bubbling fountains and grottos, there is not a dry eye left. Those having time enough should not miss Monatsschlössl and Steintheater.
Lunch in a historic ambiance
Why not combining sightseeing with a culinary discovery tour? Historic Hellbrunn Castle provides the perfect framework for a culinary intermediate stop. At attached Gasthaus Gassner, situated in the idyllic inner courtyard, fine delicacies for all tastes are served. Well-laid tables and typical floorboards result in a great contrast. Under fair weather conditions, I enjoy having lunch in the elegant pub garden.
My suggestion: afternoon coffee at Gössl Gwandhaus
Before coming back late in the afternoon, I’d suggest a short visit to Hellbrunn Zoo. Then walk via Schlosspark and Hellbrunner Allee to the banks of Salzach River, starting point of a beautiful promenade along the banks, across Volksgarten and back to the hotel. As an alternative, I recommend a detour to Gössl Gwandhaus. With its bright yellow façade and splendid ornaments, this house is a perfect flagship of typical Salzburg architecture. Under fair weather conditions, you may take a seat on the terrace from where one enjoys a magnificent panoramic view over the surroundings. Those keen on experiencing some more tradition should take a look around at the museum or the costumes shop.
Regional cuisine in the evening: K&K Restaurant at Waagplatz Square
In the evening, K&K Restaurant at Waagplatz Square with its excellent cuisine offering both regional and international specialties is worth a visit. Furthermore, the restaurant is the perfect starting point for an evening walk through the illuminated center of Salzburg. An experience which makes everyone become a romantic!
Succeeded completion on the stone terrace
A really perfect day requires an equivalent epilogue. Therefore I recommend a stay on the stone terrace where you can enjoy delicious drinks with a breathtaking view. Afterwards, our hotel invites you to a relaxing night – and the way to go there is very easy: via historic Steingasse, one of the city’s oldest streets, back to Haus Arenberg.
