\u201cHave your tasty breakfast with delight and humor, so you\u2019ll avoid any stress\u201d \u2013 true to this motto, the breakfast buffet at our Hotel Barbara ensures the perfect start into the vacation day. No matter if it is romantic in parlor, stylish in the winter-garden, or snug in the sunny \u201cG\u00e4rtle\u201d (=little garden): there are many favorite places where I prefer to commence my day. Fresh fruit salad, home-made Bircher Muesli, a large selection of sausages and cheeses, and an excellent tomato-mozzarella ensure a delicious start. My suggestion: despite such a delicious breakfast, reserve some space for the numerous delicacies the day will have to offer!<\/p>\n
At my hotel, I want to familiarize my guests with the typical \u201cFreiburg Moments\u201d. This means for instance a deeper immersion into the region\u2019s history. A great opportunity is provided by archaeological museum \u201cColombi-Schl\u00f6ssle\u201d, a neo-Gothic villa situated in the homonymous Colombi-Park just behind Hotel Barbara. The museum\u2019s focus is on the history of human development on Upper Rhine from Stone Age to early Middle-Ages. One should take one\u2019s time: in the underground treasury vault, they exhibit for example magnificent funerary goods such as jewels and arms from Allemanic graves.<\/p>\n
For the time after this visit, I recommend a short break at the Caf\u00e9 of luxury hotel Colombi, directly in front of Colombi-Park. With its Mediterranean flair, Bistro-Caf\u00e9 \u201cGraf Anton\u201d is already a real institution in the city of Freiburg. There is the city\u2019s best Cappuccino preferably combined with a \u201cSt. Honor\u00e9\u201d cake slice \u2013 a famous specialty of the house! After these culinary delights, a little city stroll is exactly the right thing: from the Caf\u00e9, go straight ahead in the direction of Unterlinden, towards our next destination: M\u00fcnsterplatz.<\/p>\n
Via Schiffstra\u00dfe and shopping mall \u201cKajo\u201d (short for Kaiser-Joseph-Stra\u00dfe), through Engelstra\u00dfe, and along Kornhaus \u2013 that\u2019s the way to M\u00fcnsterplatz market. I\u2019m magically attracted to the \u201cRote\u201d, i.e. Freiburg\u2019s famous Minster Sausage with onions and mustard. Those rather keen on another delicacy don\u2019t have to seek: innumerous delicacies ranging from pickled fruits and fresh vegetables to Stefan\u2019s probably best cheesecake worldwide are available there. Very important: I use to go to M\u00fcnsterplatz by high noon, at the latest, since just a few hours later, everything has already been cleared. As an alternative to the \u201cRote\u201d or Stefan\u2019s cheesecake, there are excellent inns around M\u00fcnsterplatz where you find the suitable thing for all tastes. To round off a pleasant lunch hour, a glass of wine from Kaiserstuhl at \u201cAlte Wache\u201d should not be refused.<\/p>\n
After so many delicacies, it\u2019s high time for a short sightseeing tour. Don\u2019t miss Freiburg\u2019s Minster closely situated at the homonymous square. Construction works on this Gothic and Romanesque church took three centuries \u2013 and it is as fascinating as it always was. After the visit of the Minster, go via Buttergasse and Schusterstra\u00dfe in the direction of Schlossberg. Along the way, Freiburg\u2019s probably most beautiful lane (Konviktstra\u00dfe) invites to an extended stroll with great shops such as gourmet food store \u201cCulinara\u201d. At the road\u2019s end, ascend Greiffeneck-Schl\u00f6ssle through Schwabentor via elevator or by foot; there is a fantastic view over Freiburg and a great beer garden under chestnut trees, an ideal place for a short rest. Back again at Schwabentor, I use to make a side-trip to \u201cInsel\u201d quarter. This historic district captivates through its marvelous houses dating back from 16th and 17th centuries. A little further on, there is Augustinerplatz where I turn to the left, along a brook, towards Fischerau, Freiburg\u2019s \u201cLittle Venice\u201d. My suggestion: don\u2019t fail to schedule a short break at Altstadtcaf\u00e9, preferably on the terrace above the brook and enjoy your five-o\u2019clock tea! The culmination point of my city stroll is at Markthalle where people gather with Champaign and selected snacks under the motto \u201cTo see and be seen\u201d.<\/p>\n
Freiburg par excellence \u2013 to me, that means M\u00fcnsterplatz and its surroundings with a variegated gastronomy. My today\u2019s favorite for a culinary experience is \u201cOberkirchs Weinstube\u201d. Here you enjoy, in a unique historic ambiance, the best classics among regional specialties. I particularly like \u201cSchwarzw\u00e4lder Sch\u00e4ufele\u201d with red wine sauce and a big salad dish, accompanied by a dry Gutedel wine from Marktgr\u00e4ferland. First-class culinary delights are also available at \u201cRoter B\u00e4r\u201d in Oberlinden near Schwabentor, Germany\u2019s oldest tavern. An excellent, creative cuisine in a noble ambiance \u2013 that\u2019s what you are offered at \u201cWolfsh\u00f6hle\u201d on the corner Konviktstra\u00dfe\/M\u00fcnzgasse. Strongly invigorated, one is then prepared to immerse into Freiburg\u2019s nightlife.<\/p>\n
For the evening, I\u2019ve devised a lot of highlights \u2013 depending on how the whim takes you. And as most locations are situated in the center, you can celebrate a perfect stroll across the nocturnal scene. Friday evening, there must be a stop at Markthalle with live music and exquisite drinks. As an alternative, I recommend a side-trip to Irish Pub \u201cIsle of Innifee\u201d at Augustinerplatz, whereas jazz fans get their money\u2019s worth at \u201cJazzhaus\u201d situated close to our hotel. Theater fans can enjoy a performance at Stadttheater, Cala-Theater, or Wallgrabentheater, and those looking for the perfect mix of Bar, Caf\u00e9, and Club are dead on at \u201cKagan\u201d near main railway station. What\u2019s about calmly enjoying a first-class cocktail with friends in an elegant atmosphere? The \u201cHemingway Bar\u201d at Hotel Victoria is exactly the right place for this! Here I like to conclude the evening and \u2013 after taking a \u201cZombie\u201d \u2013 hit the trail homewards.
