Insider tips for Klagenfurt from Der Sandwirth
Conquering Klagenfurt
In the morning, it is advisable to have a coffee with a small breakfast at Café Ingeborg. From there, we stroll across Goethepark and Schillerpark, passing by Arthouse, Europahaus, City Hall, Alps-Adriatic Gallery, and City Theater, toward the city center. Here, you can enjoy a leisurely walk, little shops and inns invite you to come and try, innumerous small lanes and 140 inner courtyards exude the charm of the South. Then you should head for the city’s landmark and heraldic animal, the “dragon” at Neuer Platz.
Start to the Lake of Wörth!
At Benediktinermarkt, there are delicacies directly from the producer in the Alps-Adriatic region – and many conversation topics! In the Kochwerkstatt, star cook Christian Cabalier serves regional dishes such as “Gailtaler Blunze”. Also a must: the “Pumpe“ with its legendary goulash.
While being in Klagenfurt on the Lake of Wörth, you should obviously not miss the lake. So, let’s go to the lake! It’s a comfortable walk of some four kilometers along the canal heading west. Those walking with kids can stop by Minimundus, the reptile zoo, and pay a visit to Europapark or Planetarium. For some refreshment and coffee, there are the GIG and the Onyx Bar at Schloss Loretto with a dreamlike lake view. The best ice cream is available at “Morle” next to Steinerne Brücke.
Really good cocktails, really good food
During summer, you can enjoy outstanding fish specialties in the Restaurant Maria Loretto ,located directly on the lakeside. Towards the south bank, the casual 151 attracts guests with its living-room atmosphere and to those wanting to enjoy award-winning cuisine, we recommend the “Dolce Vita“ with its Mediterranean dishes.
There are also many cultural and art events worth a visit: City Theater, readings in the bookstore Heyn, concerts in the Wörthersee Stadium, the detective fiction festival in autumn, during winter a Glühwein at the Christmas market… A sundowner can be enjoyed in the “Teatro”, with DJs, live-acts, and noble drinks; there you may often see, among students and businessmen, an athlete of the iconic Klagenfurt Ice Hockey Club. An alternative: the “Café am Platzl“ or the “Princs“ at Heuplatz. Youthful and lively: the hustle and bustle at “Monkeys University”, with really good cocktails and fire shows.
