Insider tips for Speyer from Hotel Am Wartturm
Fantastic breakfast and a world heritage site
The perfect day commences of course in our house. We provide a copious breakfast buffet with a lot of regional products: the eggs come from free-range chickens in the immediate neighborhood, bread and rolls are delivered fresh from an artisanal bakery.
Next up on the agenda: Speyer’s sight par excellence, the famous Romanesque-style imperial cathedral listed among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1981. Particularly worthwhile is a visit from April to October when it’s not just about the imperial hall but also the viewing platform. The way then leads to the Historic Museum of the Palatinate with Wine Museum and Cathedral Treasure; it regularly offers high-scale special exhibitions.
At noon: beer garden or wine tavern
Speyer is known for its excellent wine taverns. Stroll along Korngasse and select your favorite pub. The juice of the grape can also be substituted with the juice of the barley: during summer, the “Alte Hammer” is a true classic. This atmospheric beer garden located directly on the Rhine is accessible after a stroll across the picturesque cathedral garden.
Sightseeing, shopping, culture: anything goes!
Speyer is a city of short distances and many sights are thus within easy walking distance. After a delicious meal, stroll along Maximillianstraße or across the historic center. The shopping street is framed by numerous sights such as the imperial cathedral and the historic Old Gate (“Altpörtel”).
For a cultural afternoon, one should pay a visit to the Technology Museum. It exhibits the Russian space shuttle “Buran“ as well as antique cars, planes, a submarine, a rescue cruiser, and even the formerly famous houseboat of the “Kelly Family“. It’s perfect for an entire afternoon with much fun for children too! The way then leads to Café Hindenburg where one enjoys coffee and house-made cakes.
Outstanding dinner & nightcap in an unusual ambiance
In Speyer, you find great restaurants and atmospheric pubs – it’s thus not easy to make one’s choice. At “Domhof”, beer is home-brewed while “Ratskeller” offers a historic ambiance and “Zur Alten Münz” stands for an atmospheric wine tavern. We’ll be pleased to reserve a table for our guests and offer our inexpensive shuttle service.
Those still having some energy left at night should immerge into the “Flaming Star”: for 20 years, its name has stood for burgers, Rock ‘n’ Roll, and an unusual ambiance. Just 100 meters away, there is the “maximilian“, another hotspot for revelers.
