Insider tips for Salzburg from Hotel Astoria
The best restaurants of Austria in Salzburg
Market tour and breakfast: my perfect morning in Salzburg
In fact, each and every day in Salzburg is beautiful – I personally prefer Thursday. I use to have breakfast at “Café Fingerlos” before visiting the weekly market named “Die Schranne”. The huge offer at one of Europe’s most beautiful markets comprises fish, mushrooms, vegetables, cheese as well as Mediterranean delicacies such as olives and much more. On the other days of the week, I enjoy another option: I go to “Café Tomaselli”, a classical Austrian coffee house in the historic center. Then I suggest a walking tour across the fruit & vegetable market near Mozart’s birth place. A wonderful experience and a perfect way to start the day!
Culinary delights at Schloss Aigen
For lunch, I suggest an excursion to Schloss Aigen, an old idyllic manor with a church. The restaurant spoils its guests with refined regional cuisine which is always worth a side trip. My very personal tip: for lunch, I prefer the special, boiled beef with roast potatoes and “Apfelkren” (= horse radish in apple sauce). For the little appetite, I recommend the tasty soups or home-made “Grießnockerln” (= semolina dumplings). A wonderful place for enjoying life and relaxing!
Afternoon coffee with a view
In the afternoon, I like to go to “Steinterrasse” which has a unique view over the city. Salzburg as a whole, with its fortress, the numerous churches, and Salzach River, can be seen from there. Then I walk across Getreidegasse for a very special snack at “Carpe Diem”. Here you’ll find high-scale finger food in a creative arrangement. Each mouthful is a new seduction of your senses… And you can enjoy the best red wines of the country by the glass.
Gourmet cuisine in the evening
For dinner, I’d like to give my guests more than one good advice. As I’m at home in Salzburg, where Austria’s best restaurants are, the selection seems rather difficult. To true gourmets, I suggest for example dining at “Esszimmer” or “Ikarus” at the Hangar 7 owned by the Red Bull company. Both restaurants are known for their excellent cuisine awarded with three “Hauben” (= gourmet guide symbols). Or you go to the Old Town to enjoy a good Wiener schnitzel at “Herzl” – a rustic, beautiful restaurant at “Goldener Hirsch”.
Salzburg for any taste: my suggestions for all seasons
You should plan your evening completely on your own, depending on the season – since the city of Mozart presents itself in ever-changing clothes! My tip: if you visit Salzburg in July, August, at Easter, Pentecost, or during the famous Mozart Week, you should absolutely round off the evening with an amazing opera visit, a concert, or a theater play. Yet on any other day, Salzburg has the suitable program for all tastes – with Mozart concerts, Landestheater, the “Sound of Music” musical, or the puppet theater – to mention just a few highlights. Then I suggest a promenade across the historic center where you may round off the evening at a nice tavern. And during Christmas time, from November to end of December, you must definitely visit one of the numerous wonderful Christmas markets in and around Salzburg!
