Hamburg city trip: vital Northern German port city

Vacation in Hamburg between harbors, warehouses, culture, and boutiques

Hamburg, one of the most important Hanseatic cities, offers a historic background and all the charms of an open, diverse, and worldly major metropolis. Germany’s northern light shines with its exciting harbor district, shopping miles, and fascinating arts and culture scenes, stretching from a rich history into the modern present.

See and experience the harbor city

Hamburg’s port is the largest in Germany, and the second largest in all of Europe. It’s not located directly on the North Sea, but rather 100 kilometers inland along the Elbe. The flourishing sea trade brought riches to the city. Today, Hamburg’s maritime history is on display in two different museums: the International Maritime Museum Hamburg and the Museum Ship Cap San Diego in Hamburg’s harbor.

From Speicherstadt to modern harbor city

The historic Speicherstadt or “warehouse city” is also located on the harbor, charming visitors with a unique architectural blend of old warehouse complexes and modern glass and steel structures. Today, warehouse city is part of HafenCity, or “Harbor City,” the largest urban development project in Europe which is turning the Elbe metropolis into a beacon for other communities. Here, gourmet restaurants stand shoulder to shoulder with exclusive stores, and many of the most famous tourist attractions and museums in Hamburg line the streets. These include futuristic buildings like the Elbe Philharmonic Hall, the Unilever House, and the Marco Polo Tower, the gruesome Hamburg Dungeon and the popular Miniature Wonderland.

The Fish Market, a tourist magnet

The Hamburg Fish Market, located directly on the Elbe, draws large numbers of tourists each Sunday morning. Fish sandwiches and boxes of fruit, flowers, and sweets – a stroll through the historic Fish Market, which has been in operation since 1703, is a must for any Hamburg visitor. You’d better get up early, though – this colorful spectacle is over by 9:30 AM!

Famous / infamous nightlife or fantastic arts and culture

Another must for tourists is a side trip to the Reeperbahn, which gets its name from the so-called “Reepschläger,” makers of mooring ropes for ships. The street is part of the St. Pauli nightlife district. The gaudy neon signs of the night clubs, bars, and discos compete for attention. Not far away, the Spielbudenplatz offers a high-culture counterpoint to the city’s nightlife with three theaters: the Operettenhaus, the Schmidt Theater, and the St. Pauli Theater. Art and culture fans will find plenty to love in Hamburg’s giant Kunsthalle art gallery and in the Deichtorenhallen.

Significant religious buildings of Hamburg

Venerable symbols of the city like the main church St. Michaelis, the Peterskirche, and the St. Katharinenkirche, as well as the Imam-Ali-Moschee, built in the 1960s on Outer Alster Lake, are a must in any sightseeing program.

Hamburg Cathedral: one of the largest public carnivals in Germany

Three times a year, revelers have a special reason to make the trek to Hamburg when the Hamburg Cathedral draws crowds from all over the world to the Northern German counterpart to Oktoberfest. Each March, July, and November, the tradition – which goes back to the 11th century – delights travelers with fun, excitement, local cuisine, and just a touch of nostalgia.

After a stroll through Hamburg’s city center, anyone seeking a little rest and relaxation in nature can find a lovely retreat in the Japanese Garden, for instance, or in one of the smaller historic towns near the city.
